Projects

CarbonShack Design is driven by the philosophy that to create a truly low impact building, design must empower occupants to be stewards of the environment. We set out to create buildings that, through smart design and highly efficient systems, consume as little energy as possible. In the process, we asked ourselves, why only focus on operational energy? As buildings become more efficient and electricity is generated by more renewable sources, the production of materials used in construction becomes a larger part of a building's footprint. Our buildings maximize the percentage of reclaimed, recycled, and low impact materials to lower the carbon footprint, while maintaining the highest level of performance and design. When program allows, CarbonShack Design emphasizes biologically inspired forms and furnishings as a reminder of the importance of conserving natural systems, and as a reflection of how buildings affect, and are affected by, complex ecological webs.

Casa Zero

Casa Zero

Our first CarbonShack. This house serves as a case study, a comprehensive prototype for a new definition of green building. By integrating principles of high efficiency, low-impact materials, and natural aesthetics, this house provides environmental solutions for the variety of issues that remain unresolved by conventional green design.

Cabin of the Woods

Cabin of the Woods

Originally built in the 1930’s as part of a government program designed to entice the public to experience the glories of our national forests, Cabin of the Woods sits at 6500 feet above sea level.  Its idyllic high-altitude landscape of California Live Oaks, Douglas fir, Yucca and boulders provides an astoundingly picturesque setting – and compelling inspiration - for this sensitive, well-considered remodel.

The Lighten-Up

The Lighten-Up

In older traditional homes, kitchens were often considered little more than utility spaces. A tiny space where food was prepared, for serving family and guests in other more formal rooms. They were deliberately designed to keep the act (and mess) of food preparation out of sight of family life.

Workspace, Re-claimed
